Wicklow’s Powerscourt Distillery, a leading producer of premium whiskey, is proud to announce that it has won six major awards already for 2023. At the 2023 World Whiskies Awards, they took home two Irish category wins, while at the 2023 Icons of Whiskey Ireland Awards, they also received another “Highly Commended” award for “Irish Whiskey category Brand ambassador 2023” going to Alan Malone (European Sales Manager for the Distillery). These prestigious awards recognise the distillery’s commitment to producing top-quality spirits that are crafted with care and attention to detail.

 

“We are delighted with these awards that reflect the hard work and dedication of the team since we started in 2018. Two whiskeys that reflect the best of our home, County Wicklow, both in concept and collaboration. These recent accolades add to the hat trick of awards at won National level last November for the – Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre  - Best Visitor Attraction accepted by Gerry Ginty COO, Paul Corbett as Master Distiller/Master Blender, and a Highly Commended for Campaign Innovator accepted by Santina Kennedy – Food & Beverage Specialist at Powerscourt Distillery.

A stunning Pinot Bianco from the foothills of the Dolomites

Franz Haas was a consultant and scholar and also a founding member of the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia, whose objective is “to protect and augment the prestige of wine producers that have been making wines with the highest ratings for at least twenty years”. He was also, according to Vino Italiano, “one of the biggest and most respected brand names in the Alto Adige… Good wines across the board.”


The Alto Adige is in the north of Italy, bordering Switzerland and Austria. Italian is the majority language but not the only one spoken regularly here. Some 30% speak South Tyrolean German. The area is quite well known for its Pinot Grigio while Schiava, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Lagrein, also do well here.  Pinot Bianco is also a key part of the Franciacorta sparkling wine that is produced in Lombardy.


In whatever language you call it, the Haas family has quite a reputation on the area and I approached this Pinot Bianco with confidence. It has a bright shiny straw colour. Aromas are fruity and floral. Fruit too (ripe apples and pears) and floral on the supple palate, along with a pleasant spice and a close to piercing acidity, all leading to a rich and persistent finish. Fragrant and refreshing, with an elegant yet robust character, this is a versatile food wine. 


The wine can be served with a variety of dishes, ranging from meaty starters to pasta dishes, rice and fish with or without sauces, to light Asian and spicy curry dishes. Serve at 14-16 degrees.


The Haas family has been growing grapes in Montagna in the province of Bolzano for generations. However, it was only with Franz, who died prematurely in 2022, that they began to produce and bottle quality wines. Franz studied at Geisenheim in Germany before working as a broker of Italian wines in the German market. After several years, he took over the running of the family business.


Liberty paid him this tribute: Franz Haas went to tremendous lengths to grow quality grapes and strived to preserve the flavours of the fruit during winemaking. As a result, the wines that he produced are infused with great character, with purity and balance on the palate. To maintain the aromatic quality of his wines, Franz Haas bottled his entire production under screwcap from the 2018 vintage onwards. A revolutionary choice, he was one of the first Italian wine producers to have done so.

In a restaurant, you sometimes enjoy the food (and drink), perhaps the excellent service catches the eye, or the atmosphere is buzzing, and the value for money is good. Sometimes it all comes together and that was our experience in Oliver Plunkett Street’s Elbow Lane one recent midweek evening. 


From the warm welcome to the terrific dishes (based on local produce) and beers (from their on-site micro brewery), from the friendly and enthusiastic service, from the lively early evening atmosphere, the good value and the lovely farewell, it was five stars all the way.


The Elbow Lane Brew & Smoke House, to give it the full title, is part of the Market Lane group. The “mothership” Market Lane is right next door, Goldies is across the road, Orso is around the corner in Pembroke Street while the Castle Café in Blackrock completes the line-up.

Elbow Lane, like all the group, support local producers and the list here includes cheese (from the Olive Stall and On the Pigs Back, both in the English Market), Salad and Veg from the Churchfield Community Gardens and the Singing Frog Garden, seafood from K. O’Connell and Rossmore Oysters, Meat from the Allshire family and Tom Durcan, Spices and seasonings from Mr Bell’s, Butter from Irish Gourmet Butter, the brewery malt comes from Minch Malt (Kildare). Their own excellent beers are on draught here and other drinks come from 9 White Deer (guest), Johnny Fall Down Cider and Pom’O both by Killahora Orchids, and Kinsale Mead Company.



And these marvellous products are enhanced by their handling and cooking here, much of it open to view as you can see the grill and its operators! A little bit of theatre in this small brightly painted room.

While looking at the menu we are sipping their marvellous beers. I go for my favourite, the Angel Stout (one of the very best around), while CL enjoys the Wisdom Ale. Each of the beers is named after local lanes as are these two adjoining restaurants themselves. Elbow Lane beers are formulated specifically to work with the food in all of their five restaurants.

The menus are enthusiastically explained, if you need help, and the fish of the day (mackerel) is detailed. There are Snacks (4) and Small Plates (4) to choose from. Not too easy, as each is tempting. We go for the Duck in Blankets, jerk BBQ sauce and lime crema (from the Snacks) and the Smoked Beetroot, salsa verde, pickled red onion and ancho mayo from the Small Plates. 


We are sitting at one of the high two person tables opposite the bar and grill, sitting very comfortably indeed with a view of the action at the grill. CL had the better angle and was picking up a few tips!


On then to the mains, the staff checking every now and then to see if everything was okay,  if we wanted anything extra. The wood-grilled steaks, with cascade butter, are very popular here but we went for something that bit different on this occasion.

The Slow-smoked baby back ribs and house sauce caught CL’s eye. And despite making a merry mess with the tasty little ribs, she was very happy with them. And that mess was easily cleaned up with hot hand towels! 


My pick was the Lavender honey smoked duck breast, salsify, swede and roasted barley sauce, a beautiful combination of perfectly cooked meat and spot-on vegetables. We shared a helping of the superb simple Elbow Chips and approached the end of the meal in great form.



And that just got better with a shared dessert, their Baked apple, grilled celeriac cake, Pom’O Sabayon, and chestnut, taken with a glass of that same Pom’O from Killahora Orchards. What a treat, on the double.


Oh my, at this point, we had a warm feeling of having been spoiled by a bunch of friendly people who made sure we were well wrapped up before we headed out into the cold night.

Western Herd Spanish Point APA, 5.9%, 440ml can, The Cru


In September 1588, the Spanish Armada came to grief on the Clare coast in a savage storm. The legend lives on in the name of the place and in the name of this American Pale Ale (APA) from the Western Herd brewery. 


The pungent aromas of the all-American hop quartet make their presence felt at the outset, even as you pour this mid-golden American Pale Ale with its white head that doesn’t hang around too long. Notes of pine and citrus shine in the dank background of the palate. Good thing! (I’ve been listening to Roland Gift recently). The impression has been building, time to sit back and enjoy (and put away the notebook and maybe play the FYC on YouTube).


The Western Herd brewery stands on a picturesque Clare hilltop farm in a converted shed built over 80 years ago “by our great-grandfather”.


“We are a brother and sister team brewing beer the way nature intended.  Our great, great, great, great, great, grandfather farmed the land where our brewery now stands.  Every time we would visit the farm growing up we would think ‘if only we could bottle this’!!!  We aspire to brew beers that embody the charm and character of this idyllic hilltop farm on the west coast of Ireland.”


The brother and sister are Michael Eustace and Maeve Sheehan and the brewer, who just turned up and walked in one day in 2018, is Bridger Kelleher from Montana.

West Cork Brewing Beacon of Hops American Pale Ale, 4.1% ABV, 500ml bottle Ballymaloe Craft Fair


Sherkin Lass has been a favourite with West Cork Brewing customers since they opened in 2014. Now the long standing favourite is reportedly under pressure from this relative newcomer.


Colour is a hazy orange with a soft white top that soon sinks down too to a slim disc. It’s got quite an attractive aroma, citrus and malt. And that sets the scene for the palate where the flavours are citrus led with the malt  (with a slight hint of caramel sweetness) again providing the balance so it turns out fruity and just mildly bitter. Excellent body feel and a lip smacking finish. The brewers recommend pairing it with fish, white meats, mild cheese and salads.


Like all of their beers, this is brewed using their own spring water, is bottle conditioned, unfiltered and vegan friendly. The 2014 brewery is the first Brew-Hotel to set up in Ireland.

Ballykilcavan Line Blocker Hazy Pale Ale, 4.9%, 440 ml can, CraftCentral


Ballykilcavan tell us this New World hazy pale ale “is packed with Citra and Amarillo hops”. By the way, did you know Citra is one of the top three most grown hops in the world and is also in the US top five? 


The Line Blocker was one of first ever canned beers at Ballykilcavan. A hazy pale ale, double dry hopping helped promote the aromas and flavours of citrus and tropical fruits that you’ll find.


Colour is a murky amber/orange with a white head that soon runs out of depth. Hops are certainly evident in the aromas with exotic fruits (mango, pineapple, grapefruit and guava) fighting with citrus for space. And it is much the same on the packed palate with mango getting its nose in front of the hop posse. A good stiff drink though (with a resinous backbone), strong lip-drying finish too, thanks to all those hops.


The other ingredients are Malted Barley, oats, water, and yeast. IBU is  54.

Weather permitting, we'll bring you to the old stable yard, the champion black walnut tree of Ireland and the remains of the walled garden. Then we'll bring you into the brewery itself to find out how we make our beers.”

  • Refrigerate on delivery. Especially the hoppy ones.
  • Store beers upright
  • Avoid light
  • Enjoy with friends!
  • Do not age for too long - hoppy beers are very sensitive!


The Line Blocker is Highly Recommended.

Larkins Hustler Pale Ale 4.5% ABV, 440ml can CraftCentral


Larkins tells us this is their “classic best-selling pale ale rebranded for the new range. Hoppy but low in bitterness this beer has been a craft beer favourite since 2018.”


Pale it is, almost lemon in colour, and also very hazy, certainly not see through. The bubbly white head sinks slowly. Aromas are of the hoppy citrus kind and the hops are also in charge of the refreshing palate. For all that though, the finish is not as grippy as you might expect. Not a bad balance at all and a decent refreshing drink indeed.

Ottavio Rube Vino Blanco 2020, 12% ABV.

Costa Vescovata is a town in Piedmont and the Valle Unite is the winery. Our white is named after Ottavio Rubé, one of the founders of the co-op. It is excellent entry level natural white wine, vegan, vegetarian, and organic.

Ottavio Rubé Bianco, unfiltered and unfined, is a blend of Cortese (the grape of Gavi) and Timorasso (an indigenous white grape). The Cortese is listed in the varieties for the area in Wine Folly but not the Timorasso. That is not surprising as Italy has some 500 plus native varieties of which about 175 feature in regular everyday wines.


Aromatics in the Ottavio Rube white are an inviting mix of light fruit with floral and herbal notes. It has quite a vibrancy on the palate. Dry and medium bodied, it is a delicious wine; hard to beat the summing up by Le Caveau: a thirst-quenching mix of summer flowers, yellow plums and wild herbs held together by racy minerals.

The co-operative was born over thirty years ago, at a time when most young people left the land to seek work in the large cities of northern Italy. It was started by three young men from local farming families who were deeply attached to their land and traditional practices, who had a belief in organic farming and biodiversity as the way of the future and were committed to a way of life and farming that would be sustainable over the long term. 

The coop that they started now includes four families and 25 people, each bringing their own strengths and talents: from vine-growing and wine-making; to cheesemaking; to animal husbandry and butchery; to a hospitality and a restaurant and shop selling their own produce.

Food pairings (for this white) suggested are poultry, cheese, rich seafood dishes, raw shellfish.
