Garg’N’Go. Frizzante and biodynamic. A bottle full of fun

I met Francesco Maule in Dublin some seven years. He was quite proud, and rightly so, of his very young ‘Garg’n’Go, Veneto Frizzante IGT, “the only one with

biodynamic certification”. This delicious easy-drinking wine has stood the test of time.

Produced with Garganega and vinified in stainless steel, Garg’n’Go is a fun, approachable sparkling wine (a frizzante rather than spumante). It is vinified in stainless steel and bottled at the end of February. Refermentation in bottle is started with dried Garganega must.

Angiolino Maule is featured in a recent in-depth study of wine in Italy, VINO by Joe Campanale. Featured alongside is the Garganega grape which got a bad rap through its association with mass-produced Soave.

VINO continues, telling us that Maule is doing “"as little as possible to his Garganega grapes in order to illuminate their mineral spirit". Maule operates in  Gambellara, “just over the hills from Soave.” Though its reputation may not have benefitted from its long-standing association with Soave, Garganega remains an important Italian white grape.

That mineral spirit that VINO refers to is certainly well illuminated when you sip from your slightly clouded glass, not so cloudy though that you can’t see the posses of bubbles spouting upwards. Aromas offer notes of peach and honeydew. It’s a light-bodied dry wine with high acidity, the finish a little on the saline side.

It’s a fantastic alternative to Prosecco. L’Atitude 51, who know a thing or two about wine pairing, tell us that it “goes really well with Japanese food”. Suggestions from Wine Folly (Magnum Ed.) include lighter meats, tofu, or fish. They don’t say it on the label but this is more or less a Pet-Nat and also ideal as an aperitif. Very Highly Recommended. Pour for fun and enjoy.
