San Polo Rosso Di Montalcino. Delicious with depth and character. Very Highly Recommended.

San Polo Rosso Di Montalcino (DOC) 2021, 14% ABV

RRP €37.95. Stockists: Kelly`s Off Licence, Jus de Vine

Delicious with great depth and strong character. Very Highly Recommended.

Rosso Di Montalcino (DOC) is regarded as the lighter, younger and less expensive cousin of the area’s well-known Brunello (DOCG**), created so that

people can more immediately enjoy it while waiting for the bigger cousin to age.

After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in light-toasted, second-use French oak barriques (Allier) followed by a month of bottle ageing.

This Rosso di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese) has a bright, glossy ruby colour. Ripe cherries head the aromatics. On the palate, it is fresh and intense and immediately appealing. Tannins are fine and there’s a steady acidity and the finish is persistent.

The Rosso is delicious and offers great depth, with strong character, and is Very Highly Recommended. San Polo, certified sustainable, organic and vegan (all on the label) is often considered one of Brunello’s top producers.

  • This post is part of a series on Italian wines made from native grapes and produced by usually small or medium-sized organic wineries. Taking some “guidance” here from the recently published VINO. I may not always net the hat trick but hope to score two from the three each time. I have quite a few lined up but I’m happy to consider any suggestions or help. #OrganicItaly

** DOCG and DOC are the top two tiers in the classification pyramid of Italian wines. According to Wine Folly, there are some 73 DOCG regions and well over 300 DOC, the two accounting for 33% of Italian wine. Next come IGP or IGT wines (35%); these either do not fit the DOC/DOCG rules or are of lower quality. Basic table wines with no regional designation are labelled as VdT and account for the balance.
