In 16th century England, the law dictated much of
everyday life.
“Food was ...regulated... depending on status. A cardinal was
permitted nine dishes at a meal while those earning less than £40 a year (which
is to say most people) were allowed only three courses, plus soup. Happily,
since Henry VIII’s break with Rome, eating meat on Friday was no longer a
hanging offence, though anyone caught eating meat during Lent could still be
sent to prison for three months.”
